The Week in Words

I’m joining my friend Barbara at Stray Thoughts for her Monday feature, The Week in Words.

Welcome to The Week In Words, where we share quotes from the last week’s reading. If something you read this past week  inspired you, caused you to laugh, cry, think, dream, or just resonated with you in some way, please share it with us, attributing it to its source, which can be a book, newspaper, blog, Facebook — anything that you read.

Last week I wrote this quote in my devotional journal from Warren Wiersbe’s With the Word, page 445, concerning Song of Solomon 1:4:

“Christ calls us away from the trivial things of life that we might enjoy a deeper communion with Him. This communion is not without difficulties and disciplines, but it leads to a happier and holier life.”

I wish I could constantly remember this quote! I truly want a deeper communion with Christ . . . but many times those difficulties and disciplines through which my relationship with Him would become deeper are the very things that bar my fleshly heart from that deeper communion.

Along the same lines as the above quote, in commenting on Song of Solomon 6:11:

“Do God’s people today impress the world with their beauty and Christlikeness? Perhaps we need to meet the Beloved in His garden.” Wiersbe, With the Word, page 449.

The world may not like what we believe, but there should be no denying that there is something different about us! And that difference should be Christlikeness – not simple oddness or peculiarity.

If you have a quote to share, or just want to find some food for thought, stop by Stray Thoughts and join in!

Both good quotes. I have to confess I don't consciously think about whether my attitudes and actions glorify Him as much as I should.

  2. The trivial things...yes, we are called away from those. Even as we are having to do them! I want to remember that even when washing dishes or cleaning toilets, I can go deeper into communion with Christ and do all for his glory instead of just complaining about the surface task that I'm having to do.

  3. Barbara ~ I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't consciously think about how I'm pleasing the Lord all the time! ;)

Lisa ~ You caught an angle I never even considered! I was thinking the "trivial things of life" were things that didn't matter in eternity, such as our possessions, entertainment, etc. Thanks for the different perspective!
