Wednesday in the Word: Extreme Makeover, Divine Edition

This entry was cross-posted today at KJV Blog Directory.

This past Monday night, we had our first ladies' meeting at People's Baptist Church since my husband assumed the pastorate. We kept things very simple: a quick game, a light devotional, and some coffee and cookies. I hope to gradually add some more things in as we move through the year.

I wanted to share with you the devotion I brought Monday night. I played off the old show Extreme Makeover, thinking how God does perform an extreme makeover on us when He saves us! So here we go . . .

Extreme Makeover: Divine Edition

There was a show several years ago, entitled Extreme Makeover, on which the “experts” took extreme measures to change people’s appearances. Each person was always grateful to have these changes made, and I once saw a father cry from happiness over the changes in his daughter. I wonder what kind of extreme changes God would like to see in us, and what He would do in our lives if we allowed Him to perform His Extreme Makeover?

v    Lose weight
Hebrews 12:1 – “Wherefore . . . let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us . . .”

-          Repent
-          Confess
-          Put away

v    Get a new hairstyle
II Corinthians 10:5 – “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

-          Cast down strongholds of Satan’s lies
-          Replace his lies with God’s Truth

v    Get a manicure
I Timothy 2:8 – “I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands . . .”

-          Holy hands are clean hands
-          Holy hands are willing hands
-          Holy hands are helpful hands

v    Put on some lipstick
Colossians 4:6 – “Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

-          A soft answer turns away wrath
-          Sweetness of the lips increases learning
-          Speak the truth in love (faithful are the wounds of a friend)
-         No gossip (an angry countenance drives away a backbiter)

v    Get new glasses
Philippians 3:14 – “. . . forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark . . .”

-          Forget those things that are behind
-         Reach forward to new things

v    Get a new wardrobe
Ephesians 4:24 – “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

-          Take off the old man
-          Put on the new man

What can God do with YOU in 2011?
Will you let Him perform His Extreme Makeover?
