Five Principles for Christian Dress

I've noticed that the pages on my blog that get the most hits (views) are the ones dealing with modest dress. While I'm pretty sure that all of us believe in dressing modestly, we vary quite a bit on exactly what modesty is. Several years ago, I posted an entry containing five principles of modest dress from a sermon that my former pastor delivered. Since there is always interest in this subject, I wanted to repost that entry today. I hope you'll find something in it that will be a help to you.Day Dream

Here are five principles for modest dress that my pastor preached in a sermon several years ago. I wrote them in the back of my Bible because they are good guidelines for anyone, no matter how you feel about the particulars of what a Christian should wear.

1. Modesty - Is this article of clothing modest? Does it cover me sufficiently? I Timothy 2:9

2. Not worldly - Is this clothing a passing fad of the world? Does it follow the current trends of the world? I John 2:15

3. Difference - Is this clothing distinctly different than that of the opposite gender? Does it immediately and modestly identify me as a male or female? Deuteronomy 22:5

4. Unoffensive - Is this clothing offensive to anyone? Would it cause my brother in Christ to stumble in his walk with the Lord? Is there anything about it that would cause my brother in Christ to sin? Romans 14:7,8,12,13 and I Corinthians 10:23 and 8:13

5. Glorifies God - Does this clothing glorify God? Does it bring glory or undue attention to me? I Corinthians 10:31

  1. AMEN..and I can't write AMEN enough times!

Sadly..modesty is one of the main things we deal with...even in the church!

Praise GOD there are still some women out there who do care about the testimony of the WORD in our lives...it is manifest by our choices of clothing. People read you ...sometimes before they ever read a Bible.

Great post thank you for reposting..so needful.

    HOPE~
    Enjoy your break!

  2. HI, thanks for the repost. I discovered you through a google word search. I am a fashion designer, I've been doing freelance and am developing my own line of young women's clothing to be manufactured. I am so excited when I find people that value modesty. My mission is to be a resource that is reliably modest. And as you mentioned, there are many definitions of modest. Mine will include shoulders covered and hems to the knee and "cute". I'll let you know when I have things on line, right now I just have a placeholder site. Best wishes!! Andrea D.

  3. I have to tell you Susan..this sure can be a HOT BUTTON topic. And I think it is because the enemy wants us women to rebel in this area.....I am not sure how it works..and I have come to the conclusion that MOST women do not even KNOW...truly know what modest looking clothing is. I know many Christian woman...that do wear just dresses or skirts yet believe me they are NOT modest...I am thinking somewhere along the line, we are going...(WE as the Body..or Titus 2 women) are going to really have to spell it out....seriously...this is so sad because so many are just so deceived....they just don't get how a man *thinks*...or really what they look like.
    IMHO...with love,
    Deby

  4. Those are great Susan. Good way to gauge all the items in our closet.
Modestly is such a big deal in the life of a Christian lady because it has a lot more to do with the inside than it does the outside.
    Good post!

  5. Deby, I am in total agreement. I am seeing this as a BIG problem in our churches today. It is truly sad that people who try to please the Lord are called Judgmental and Pharisaical

  8. Hi! I found you through Baptist Missionary Wives blog. I have written several posts on the theme of modesty over the last few months. I find that people really need some guidelines, and they need to be Scriptural. When women see the concepts from the Bible, they are ready to change and follow. :o) I am glad to have found you!
