About six weeks ago, I asked you to pray for my cousin, DeWayne Poss. He had just been through a year of chemo and radiation for colon cancer, only to find it had returned quickly. It was very aggressive, and there was nothing more the doctors could do for him.

DeWayne spent the past few weeks at home with his family. He had some good days when he could be up and around, eat, go for a ride, and watch football games, but over the past two weeks had gradually become bedridden and very weak. Updates from his sister indicated he was nearing the end of his life. He seemed to be hanging on for some reason.

Yesterday was Christmas. One of DeWayne's last wishes was to live through Christmas this year. He made it through the day, and sometime overnight, DeWayne passed over to Heaven.

I never once saw a discouraged word from DeWayne. To the very end, every update from his sister indicated that he was still in good spirits, asking only that God be glorified by whatever happened. The comments from friends and family who knew him well show that DeWayne was a servant of the Lord and his family most of all, and that he was a kind and caring friend to everyone. I've seen many words of sadness that he is gone, but most of all I've seen people rejoicing that we will meet again in Heaven. From every indication, DeWayne finished his race well. And that's truly what matters when we come to the end of our lives, isn't it? That we finish well the course that God has laid before us.

Please continue to pray for his family this week. They are so tired. The days ahead will be hard, as you know if you've ever lost a close family member to death. Thank you so much for praying!

  1. We have been there and understand the mixed emotions of gratitude for the Hope we enjoy and sadness for the time of separation to endure. I'll be praying for all who are impacted. What a testimony this gentleman leaves. That is a blessing.

  2. I'm glad he crossed the finish line and ran his race well, but I am sad for the family left behind. May they know God's grace and comfort in the coming days.
