Popping In . . .

Just a note to thank you all for your anniversary wishes for us! We appreciate each one!

Our weekend in Vancouver was very nice. We didn't tell anyone there we were coming, so we just kicked around by ourselves all day Saturday. We stayed in the Marriott Pinnacle near the waterfront in downtown Vancouver. It's one of those swanky hotels, where the rooms cost triple what they do in an ordinary hotel and they have valet parking (which we didn't use!) and people to open the automatic sliding doors for you. We found a good deal through Travelzoo, so it didn't cost us anywhere near as much as it normally would. I'll tell you one thing, though: a hotel room is pretty much a hotel room. Our room was nice, but it was about the same as one you'd find in a Holiday Inn. We were on the 16th floor, in a view room, and our view was . . . other skyscrapers! There was one little slit between buildings where we could see across the inlet, but that was all the view we had! We both felt that, for the price, we'll just keep staying at Holiday Inn!

We spent most of the day Saturday on Granville Island, a local attraction with lots of shops and little restaurants. Wes was truly a good sport, taking me to such a place with all kind of little shops and things to look at. He knows how much I love to "just look." We even bought a few early Christmas gifts (it's really not so early, though, is it?), which is unusual for us. We're usually still shopping a couple of days before Christmas! We also bought some salsas from Rio Verde Gourmet Salsa, which operates a booth at Granville Island, and apparently it's the only place you can buy it. I tried the Spicy Mango and Salsa Verde varieties - and brought a jar of each home with me! So good!

We did the fancy-restaurant-thing at the Showcase Restaurant in our hotel on Saturday night. The food was included as part of our deal with Travelzoo. It was SO delicious! I love to get dressed up and eat fancy food, even if it's just once a year. We had a fruit and cheese tray for our appetizer, and we both ordered a nice salad to go with our steaks. Everything was arranged beautifully on our plates, there was nice music playing in the background, and we had elegant desserts with the best coffee I've had in a while. Now that we're home, I wish I'd taken pictures, but I just never think to take them when we're living the experience. Anyway, we don't do the fancy dinner thing too often. Neither of us is all that dignified, but it's fun to pretend now and then! ;)

On Sunday, we went to church at Urban Community Baptist Church, pastored by our good friend, Shawn Beliveau. They have a morning service, followed by a small lunch, then an afternoon service. That was perfect for us to get back on the road in mid-afternoon, and we arrived back home in Kelowna around 7:30 that evening. It's a beautiful drive from the coastal mountains, through the valley, back into the mountains on the highest elevation of paved road in BC, then down into the golden Okanagan Valley we call home. The moon was bright and full that night, and its reflection on the water was a delight as we came down into the valley along Okanagan Lake. We were so glad to be home in our little condo again! The only thing we miss about the big city is the people we love and care about!

Thank you once again for your wishes!
