Wednesday in the Word: Come . . .

I just can't seem to forget Song of Solomon! Although I have advanced in my Bible reading into Isaiah this week, my thoughts have returned over and over to the things I read last week in Song of Solomon. This week I want to share another thought from chapter 7, concerning fellowship with our Beloved.
"Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages. Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves." Song of Solomon 7:11,12

One of the comments on this chapter in With the Word suggested inviting the Lord to go to some special place with us to show Him our love. We usually think of the Lord inviting us to come to or with Him, but the thought of inviting Him to come with me was really intriguing! We know that He desires fellowship with us, so it makes sense that He would be pleased to have us plan a special time with Him, getting to know Him better and letting Him know we love Him.

That sounds good, but how would it look in real life? We are all busy, no matter what circumstances or stage of life we're in, aren't we? Not many of us can take a day to slip away and read the Bible and pray the whole day, although we might like to. So how can we invite the Lord to a special place?

First, we can find a literal place to go for a time of devotion to Him. The most logical place is in your own home - maybe a special corner of the living room where you like to have your devotions. Maybe on the porch or deck, now that the weather is cooler. If you have a park nearby and have the freedom (and safety) to go alone, you could go there for a few minutes one day to fellowship with the Lord. What about taking a walk and just take that time to tell the Lord how much you love Him? You could even do that in the bath! Some of us might even be able to take a half day or even overnight to literally get away to spend time with the Lord. I've read of ladies doing that, but I've never felt the freedom to go away alone for that length of time, and I'm guessing that very few of us would be able to do that . . . but it IS one option.

We can also make a special time to fellowship with the Lord. My favorite time is the early morning. Although it's rare that I get up extra early to read and pray, it's a wonderful time to fellowship with the Lord before the rest of the family gets up and the busyness of the day begins. You can make a special time for prayer during the day when you just go into a private place and speak to the Lord. How about just spending some extra time? Maybe pray while you work, or while you drive (don't close your eyes, though!), or spend extra time during your regular devotion time, extending it for a few minutes just to say "I love you" to your Savior.

It's so easy to get into a routine of Bible reading and prayer and forget that we are talking with our Beloved, our Savior, our Best Friend. He desires our fellowship. Can you find a time or place this week to spend just a small amount of time loving Him, above and beyond your normal time of devotions? Look for ways to deepen your relationship with your Beloved!
