December Daily: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

I had never noticed this Christmas hymn until Thanksgiving evening when we were singing around the piano with our friends. It's the same tune as Jesus What a Friend of Sinners, which I love, and as I read the words to this song, what a blessing they were! It was written in 1745 by Charles Wesley.

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel’s Strength and Consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear Desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

    I love, love love this hymn!!!!!!!!
    I had heard it as a child with different lyrics, but I like these better.

    Charles wesley's hymns are incredibly sweet and doctrinal. One of my favorites is "Arise my soul, arise" which talks of salvation.

    I love these old hymns too, Rhonda! My husband likes to have our congregation sing them every now and then for their majesty and their doctrinal words.

    Hey Susan! I had never heard this hymn either until my 7 year old daughter's choir instructer gave it to her to learn for children's choir. They sang it last Sunday and it was such a blessing to hear the words and hear these precious little ones singing the old hymns. I showed my husband your blog today of this. We both agreed that God was speaking to us about the direction the music is going in in some of our SB church's today. Out with the old in with the new is not always a good thing! God spoke to us both through your blog. I was blessed today as I checked to see what new post you had up and it was this same song Blaire had sang! Hope you have a blessed night!

Building An Effective Scripture Journal

Have you ever had a dream that you were witnessing to someone, and you turned to a familiar passage of Scripture, only to find it missing from your Bible? No matter how much you searched for it, it just wasn't there? No? Maybe I'm the only one who has had a dream like that, but maybe in real life, you've wondered where to find a certain Scripture for a specific problem, but you couldn't remember where to find it. Yes, there are concordances to look up key words, but it would be nice if you just had your own topical reference so you could look up Scripture passages that mean the most to you and the issues you face in daily life. I reviewed the book What Do I Know about My God? by Mardi Collier several weeks ago. I am convinced this is the best book I've ever read on making God and His Word real in your life. Meet My Bible

I first saw this several months ago on Jessica's Journal , who found it at Amy's Place , and I knew I wanted to do it here. I'm just now getting to it. I wanted a wide-margin Bible so I could take sermon notes in it, and I wanted one with no notes or cross-references so I could make my own.
