December Daily: O Holy Night

Today and next Sunday I want to share a couple of my favorite Christmas carols. My all-time favorite is O Holy Night. I love the words, the music, the depth of emotion in the song. I'm learning Bro. Cary Schmidt's solo piano arrangement to play next Sunday morning, and as I practice I get lost in the majesty of this song! Wes has a beautiful voice, and he used to sing this every Christmas at our church in Ft. Worth. Needless to say, the combination of my favorite hymn with my husband's voice is a wonderful sound to me!

O Holy Night
Words by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure
Music by Adolphe Adams
O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
'Til He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! O, hear the angels' voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born;
O night divine, O night, O night Divine.
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
Here come the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friend.
He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
Behold your King, Behold your King.
Truly He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever,
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
His power and glory evermore proclaim.
What are your favorite Christmas carols?

  1. oh, I love O Holy Night too!! :) But I think my all-time favorite is O Little Town of Bethlehem. I just love it. I have been working on Christmas arrangements for offertories too -- Christmas music is just so beautiful.

    Merry Christmas!!!

  2. I choked on my Christmas offertory yesterday! There was one point where what was written on the page didn't sound right on the keys. I rarely stop playing - just try to gloss over mistakes - but this time it just wasn't sounding right. I finally trusted the notes and my eyes, and it ended up fine. I'm a little nervous about O Holy Night - I still have a few rough spots to work out!

  3. I'm glad it turned out okay!! :) I hate making mistakes, but thankfully most people don't notice unless it's really major. I can't read music very well anyways, so I just make a lot of stuff up. :) :) Hope your "O Holy Night" goes very well.
