Here is an article I read this morning on Yahoo! News, concerning the "safe injection site" operated here in Vancouver. This is just one of the things that we find so amazing here: drug addicts are allowed a safe place to shoot up, with medical personnel nearby, so that they can indulge their addictions with no fear. The operators of this site are seeking permanent exemption from Canada's drug laws. They've been granted extensions on their temporary exemptions, but the latest one expires on June 30th.
Drug addiction and all its facets - the health risks, the increase in crime, the poverty, the hopelessness - truly does need attention. My heart goes out to those who are caught in addictions, and I know that they need serious help. Shouldn't we be trying to help people break free of addictions, rather than helping them sink farther into them? I believe the answer is found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ: forgiveness of sin and the power to overcome addictions. Sure, it's hard to overcome addictions. I'm not a Pollyanna who thinks that once a person is saved, life becomes a bed of roses. But I believe wholeheartedly that God can and will give a person the power to overcome any addiction, if they surrender their will to His. That's our job here: at the very least to offer this Good News to others. The choice is theirs, of course, to accept it or reject it, but our job is to tell them! Please continue to pray for us as we continue trying to reach people, one by one.
